COMPULSORY INTERNSHIP

The compulsory internship period for students to complete their undergraduate program is at least 40 working days. In order for students to become well acquainted with the different subfields of psychology, different institutions in the field, and to gain diverse experiences, this period must be completed in two parts of 20 working days each. It is considered advisable for students to begin their compulsory internship after the sixth semester.

The purpose of the student's internship is to learn how the theoretical knowledge they received during their undergraduate education is applied in their professional life, to obtain practical information about the sub-fields of psychology, to determine the sub-field in which they want to specialize in the future, and to be better prepared theoretically and practically for the profession and the sub-field they have chosen.

Please, all our students read the Frequently Asked Questions section carefully.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT INTERNSHIP

1.    Can I do my compulsory internship before completing my 3rd year?

Answer:
No, you cannot do your compulsory internship before completing your 3rd year. Only students who have completed their 2nd year and have received a hospital internship offer under the National Internship Program are permitted to complete their compulsory internship before finishing their 3rd year.

2.    When can I take Field Studies I/II courses?

Answer:
Field Studies I/II are 4th-year compulsory courses. Since all students, except those who have received an offer from the National Internship Program, can complete their compulsory internship at the earliest after completing their 3rd year, the earliest semester you can take the course will be the 4th-year Fall Semester. Therefore, you are not permitted to take the course earlier. Only students who have received an offer through the National Internship Program and have therefore completed their compulsory internship earlier can take Field Studies I in their 3rd year and submit their internship reports.

3.    How many compulsory internships will I have to do, and how many days are they?

Answer:
You have 2 compulsory internships. They must be completed for 20 days each at separate institutions.

4.    Can I complete both of my compulsory internships at the same institution for a total of 40 days?

Answer:
No. The two compulsory internships must be at different institutions and each must be for 20 working days.

5. At which institutions can I do my first internship?

Answer:
You can do it at colleges, nurseries, companies' human resources departments, women's and family health centers, courthouses, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, psychological counseling centers, the Ministry of Family and Social Policies, municipalities, etc. If you have not yet completed your Psychopathology I, Psychopathology II, and Clinical Psychology courses when you do your first internship, it is not recommended that you do a hospital internship. If you have completed them, you can do your first internship anywhere you can do an internship.

6. Is it essential to have a psychologist at the institution where I will do my internship?

Answer:
You should prioritize institutions that have psychologists, but if there are no psychologists, you can also do your internship at institutions that have psychological counselors, psychiatrists, sociologists, social workers, or human resources specialists/managers.

7.    Can I do both of my compulsory internships in the same subfield of psychology, for example, both in clinical psychology or both in industrial-organizational psychology, but not at the same institution?

Answer: Yes, you can.

8.    Can I do my compulsory internship outside of the summer season?

Answer:
Yes, you can. You can do it during the year, depending on the gaps in your course schedule, for 2 or 3 days a week, or during the mid-term break.

9. Can I do my compulsory internship at a psychiatric hospital?

Answer:
A hospital internship will not be productive without taking Psychopathology I, Psychopathology II, and Clinical Psychology courses. After taking these courses, you can do your internship at state hospitals outside Istanbul or at private hospitals in all cities, including Istanbul, if you wish.

10. Who can I ask if my question is not covered in this section?

Answer:
If you have read and reviewed the other headings on the site but still cannot find an answer to your question, you can contact our Department Internship Coordinator, Research Assistant Hülya Fidantek (h.fidantek@iku.edu.tr).

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS

1. What documents are required for the internship application process?

Answer: The "COMPULSORY INTERNSHIP FORM" must be completed in order to begin the compulsory internship (the form is available on the website among the documents required for the compulsory internship process).

The Compulsory Internship Form must be signed and stamped by an authorized person from the institution where you will be doing your internship. Subsequently, the Academic Advisor section on the form must be signed by the Head of the Psychology Department, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayhan Erbay.

NOTE: Students who will be doing their internship at a state hospital affiliated with the Turkish Ministry of Health in Istanbul must fill out the "VOCATIONAL TRAINING AGREEMENT" instead of the Compulsory Internship Form, obtain a signature on this document, and upload the relevant document to the internship application system. (See Article 2 of the Protocol on Internships to be Completed in Istanbul under the Turkish Ministry of Health).

2. Who should I have sign the compulsory internship form?

Answer: You must have Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayhan Erbay sign the relevant sections of the Compulsory Internship Form.

3. Can my compulsory internship form be signed by the director or any other authorized person instead of a psychologist?

Answer: Yes, it can. It is sufficient for an authorized person from the institution where you will be doing your internship to sign it.

4. Can I do my compulsory internship on Saturdays? Can I count Saturdays when calculating the 20 working days?

Answer: Yes, you can do your internship on Saturdays if the institution where you will be doing your internship is open on Saturdays and accepts you for your internship on that day. However, Sundays are not counted as working days. Therefore, you should not count Sundays and public holidays when calculating your 20 working days.

5. I have filled out the relevant information on my Compulsory Internship Form completely and had it signed. Where should I upload my document in PDF format to submit my application?

Answer: You must log in to the internship management system via the https://www.iku.edu.tr/tr/staj website using your IKU email address with your student number at the beginning, no later than 10 days before your internship start date. You must scan your signed, stamped, and fully completed compulsory internship form and upload it to the system in PDF format.
It is very important that you upload your attachments in PDF format, otherwise your application will be deleted as it will not be visible on the system, and the process will be repeated until you upload the attachment as a PDF.

NOTE: The compulsory internship form is not accepted in person during the internship application; you must upload it online via the system.

6. What are the important points to consider when applying for an internship in the internship application system?

Answer:

a. You must upload your document to the internship application system as a PDF, as specified in Article 2, with all information complete and all signatures obtained.

b. Internship applications in the system must be submitted at least 10 days before your internship start date. For example, if your internship starts on September 30, you can submit your application through the internship application system no later than September 20. Applications submitted on September 21 will not be accepted. It is also not recommended to apply exactly 10 days in advance, because if there is a problem with the system or an error/omission in your documents, your application will be deleted, and you will have to re-upload your documents and reapply from scratch. However, if you leave it until the last day, you may have to change your internship start date due to the possibility of complications and the 10-day rule. Therefore, it is not recommended to wait until the last day.

c.  The start and end dates of the internship are entered into the system as “YEAR-MONTH-DAY”. If you do not enter them in this format, even if you submit your internship application for approval, it will be deleted by the Department Internship Coordinator, Research Assistant Hülya Fidantek, because the dates are incorrect.

d. If your internship application is deleted for any reason, you may not receive any notification on your system or email. Therefore, you are responsible for checking the application system. If necessary, attempts will be made to contact you via the email address you entered in the application system. For this reason, you should enter an email address that you actively use and check your emails frequently.

NOTE: In some cases, the documents you upload to the system may not open. For explanations regarding this situation, please refer to the "Frequently Asked Questions" section on the website.

7. Is there anything else I need to do after my internship application is approved by the internship application system?

Answer: After ensuring that the information and required signatures on the documents are complete, upload them to the system in PDF format and check that the dates are entered correctly on your document and in the system (in YEAR-MONTH-DAY format), then you can send them for approval. Once your application is approved by the department, it is forwarded to our university's Human Resources Unit so that your internship insurance can be arranged. There is no other action required on your part.

8. Can I complete my compulsory internship without taking the Field Studies course?

Answer: Yes, you can. For example, if you do your internship in the summer, you can prepare your internship report and then obtain the necessary signatures from the authorized person at the institution, and keep your internship report ready. When you take the course in the next semester, you will submit your internship report at the end of the semester. However, in order to pass the course, you must take this course and submit your internship report.

9. What should I do for voluntary internship applications?

Answer: The department only approves compulsory internship applications within the scope of 20 working days. Voluntary internships are optional, and internship insurance is not covered by the department/school for voluntary internships. Therefore, applications for voluntary internships are not evaluated.

10. Can I do an online internship?

Answer: Online internships are not accepted as compulsory internships.

11. Who can I ask if my question is not listed here?

Answer: If you have read and reviewed the other headings on the site but still cannot find an answer to your question, you can contact our Department Internship Coordinator, Research Assistant Hülya Fidantek (h.fidantek@iku.edu.tr).

QUESTIONS ABOUT INSURANCE

1. Will I be insured during my compulsory internship?

Answer:
Yes, your compulsory internship insurance will be covered by Istanbul Kültür University.

2. SSI number is wanted on the compulsory internship form. I do not know my SSI number, what should I do?

Answer:
It is sufficient to write your TR ID number for the financial affairs unit to deposit your insurance. It does not matter if the SSI number is not written after the TR ID number is written.

3. My insurance is already being paid because I am also working, what should I do?

Answer:
These students, after uploading the compulsory internship form and applying for their internship through the system, must inform Human Resources that their insurance is already being paid.

4. Is there insurance for voluntary internships, apart from my compulsory internship covering the 20 working days?

Answer:
There is no insurance for voluntary internships.

5. What would happen if I added Sundays and Holidays when calculating the 20 working days for my compulsory internship?

Answer:
Sundays and national holidays are not counted as working days. Therefore, you should not count Sundays or national holidays when calculating your 20 working days. Otherwise, your internship insurance will not have been paid on these days, and you will appear to have done an internship for the remaining days excluding these days.

6. When and how can I access the Insurance Status Document?

Answer:
Your Insurance Status Document is added to your internship application system by Human Resources approximately two days before the start of your internship. If you still cannot access your Insurance Status Document in the system on the day you start your internship, you can contact Human Resources (ik@iku.edu.tr).

7. To whom can I ask questions that are not included in this section?

Answer:
If you have read and examined the other topics on the website but still cannot find an answer to your question, then you can contact our Department Internship Coordinator Res. Assist. Hülya Fidantek (h.fidantek@iku.edu.tr).

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP TO BE DONE WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE T.R. MINISTRY OF HEALTH PROTOCOL

1. Can I arrange a personal internship at a public hospital affiliated with the T.R Ministry of Health in Istanbul?
Answer
: No, you cannot arrange your own internship at hospitals affiliated with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Turkey within the provincial borders of Istanbul. Internships at public hospitals in Istanbul are carried out within the framework of the protocol made within the scope of Istanbul Kültür University and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Turkey, and no internship outside this framework will be accepted under any circumstances.

2. What is the protocol between Istanbul Kültür University and T.R. Ministry of Health?
Answer:
T.R. Ministry of Health announces internship/applied training quotas specifically determined for our school every term. We ask our students who have completed Psychopathology I, Psychopathology II and Clinical Psychology courses, and those who want to benefit from this opportunity, to apply to our department after the quotas reserved for the Psychology department are announced by the Ministry of Health. There are various conditions for application, you can access the relevant criteria in the file named "State Hospital Internship Criteria", which is among the "Compulsory Internship Information Documents" on the site. If the number of students requesting is more than the number of quotas communicated to us; We rank our students according to their GPA and the amount of credits completed and direct as many students as the quota to internship places within the framework of the protocol. In order to be informed about the information, you should regularly follow the announcements from the group that is contacted for department announcements via İKÜ CATS.

3.How many times a year are students sent within the scope of the T.R. Ministry of Health protocol?
Answer:
Students are sent three times a year: Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.

4. What is the document required by the department from students who will go on internship within the scope of the T.R. Ministry of Health protocol?
Answer:
Students who will go for internship within the scope of the protocol are required to fill out and upload only the VOCATIONAL TRAINING CONTRACT to the internship application system (Compulsory Internship Form is not accepted for these students). NOTE: The signature and stamp part of the Vocational Training Agreement must be filled out by the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. However, during the process of obtaining this stamp and signature, students must go and get the signature and stamp on the date and time determined by the Department Internship Coordinator (Res. Assist. Hülya Fidantek). Action will be taken against students who violate the appointment system.

5. What documents may be requested by hospitals from students who go on internship under the protocol?
Answer:
Although the requests of each hospital are different, a committee report, SSI status certificate, and occupational health and safety training certificate are generally required. Before starting your internship, you need to talk to the authorized person at the hospital about the additional documents required. Since the documents in question are requested by the hospitals, there is no need to submit them to the department separately.

6.How can I obtain the Occupational Health and Safety Training Certificate required from students who will go on internship within the scope of the T.R. Ministry of Health protocol?
Answer:
Occupational Health and Safety Training is provided by the relevant unit of the university only to students who are sent to public hospitals within the scope of the protocol. The dates of the Occupational Health and Safety Training in question are announced by the Department Internship Coordinator on the İKÜ CATS department announcement page. The specified Occupational Health and Safety Training is not available for students who are outside the protocol.

7. I was entitled to an internship at a public hospital with the protocol of the T.R. Ministry of Health. Although my name was sent to the hospital, I will not be able to go to the internship due to personal reasons. What will happen in this case?
Answer:
You lose your internship right and you cannot benefit from this right again. If you are unable to go to the internship, you must write an Internship Cancellation Petition and submit it to the Department Internship Coordinator (See Article 3 of the Other Questions Heading).

8. I did an internship at a public hospital with the protocol of the T.R. Ministry of Health. Can I benefit from this right again in the following periods?
Answer:
If a student who is sent to a public hospital in Istanbul for internship within the scope of the protocol makes a second application, this application will not be taken into consideration. As a result, each student can benefit from this protocol once.

9. To whom can I ask questions not included in this section?
Answer:
If you have read and examined other titles on the site but still cannot find an answer to your question, then you can contact our Department Internship Coordinator, Res. Assist. Hülya Fidantek (h.fidantek@iku.edu.tr).

ABOUT THE MANDATORY INTERNSHIP REPORT

1. How and in what form will I write the Compulsory internship report?

3. When am I going to hand in my internship report?

Answer
: Your compulsory internships and the reports you have prepared for these internships are evaluated with the Field Studies I course you will take in the 7th semester and the Field Studies II course you will take in the 8th semester. You will need to submit your internship reports in the context of the Field Studies I course in December, and in the context of the Field Studies II course in May.

4. To whom am I going to hand in my internship report?

Answer: Yes, it is.

7. What am I going to do with the internship evaluation form?

Answer: The internship evaluation form must be filled out by the authorized person at the institution where you had your internship after your internship is over. 8. To whom can I ask questions that are not included in this section?

Answer: If you have read and examined the other topics on the website but still cannot find an answer to your question, then you can contact our Department Internship Coordinator Res. Assist. Hülya Fidantek (h.fidantek@iku.edu.tr).

OTHER QUESTIONS

1. Can I do an internship outside of the city?

Answer:
Yes, you can do an internship outside of Istanbul. Because it will be difficult for students doing an internship outside of the city to come back to the school to get a signature from the Head of Department after obtaining a signature and stamp from the institution where they will do their internship, they can get a signature for the necessary document at the school from the Head of Department or Vice Head of Department before they go outside the city (See Articles 2 and 3 of the title Regarding the Compulsory Internship Application Process).

2. I want to do my compulsory internships back-to-back. Can I start one right after the first one is over?

Answer:
When one of your internships is over, starting the other one is not possible in the same month due to insurance procedures. For example, if your first internship ends on July 29, you can start your second internship on August 1, at the earliest in the next month.

3. I completed both my compulsory internships. Can I do a third compulsory internship?

Answer:
A total of two compulsory internships, only 20 working days each, are approved.

4. I have applied for my internship but for an important reason I cannot go and would like to cancel my internship. What can I do?

Answer:
If you will not be able to start/do your internship for a valid reason after making your internship application, then you must request internship cancellation through the internship application system.

5. The institution where I will do my internship wants an internship contract, what should I do?

Answer: Y
ou should contact the Department Internship Coordinator Res. Assist. Hülya Fidantek.

6. How should students from another department, double majoring in the Department of Psychology, follow the internship application process?

Answer:
With the renewal of the internship application system, these students can also now apply through the internship application system.

7. To whom can I ask questions that are not included in this section?

Answer:
If you have read and examined the other topics on the website but still cannot find an answer to your question, then you can contact our Department Internship Coordinator Res. Assist. Hülya Fidantek (h.fidantek@iku.edu.tr).

Mistake 1: Asking questions without looking through the information about the internship application on the website:

Many questions you may have had, have already been answered in the file “REGARDING THE COMPULSORY INTERNSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS” and “FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS” on the https://psk.iku.edu.tr/en/student/mandatory-internship website. Please read and review the information here carefully.

In line with the information presented, the applications of the students which do not fit the given framework of rules will be deleted!

Mistake 2: Counting Sundays or national holidays when calculating dates for the 20 working day internship:

Saturdays are counted as working days. However, because Sundays and public holidays are not counted as working days, you should not include these days when calculating your 20 working day internship.

Mistake 3: Getting your academic advisor's signature on the Compulsory Internship Form:

You must obtain the signature of the Head of Department (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayhan Erbay) in the Academic Advisor section and the Department/Program Internship Advisor Approval section of the Compulsory Internship Form.

Applications of the students who obtain their own academic advisor's signature will be deleted from the system.

Mistake 4: Trying to get a signature from the Head of Department before filling in the Compulsory Internship Form:

After filling in all the relevant sections on your Compulsory Internship Form, you must first get a signature and a stamp from the institution where you will do your internship. Afterwards, you can only get a signature from the Head of Department when the form is completely filled in.

Mistake 5: The problem of uploaded internship application documents not appearing/opening in the internship application system:

There may be several reasons for this;
a. The documents may not open when sent for approval if you have uploaded them to the internship application system from your phone. For this reason, if possible, make your applications via a computer.
b. Documents you have uploaded to the system apart from PDF’s cannot be opened.
c. The size of the documents you uploaded may have been too large and therefore the system may not be able to save your application. If your application still somehow does not occur, it is recommended that you check the file size and upload it by reducing the file size.

When you send your applications for approval, the applications of students whose Compulsory Internship Form uploaded to the system are not openable/visible will be deleted.

Mistake 6: Entering the wrong internship start and end dates in the internship application system:

In the system, dates are entered as “YEAR-MONTH-DAY” . If you do not pay attention to this rule and, for example, try to enter it as day-month-year, it may appear as if you are starting your internship in the year 2060 and you may have sent it for approval this way.

In this case your application will be deleted by the department internship coordinator, and you will need to apply again.

Mistake 7: Applying to the internship application system less than 10 days before the internship start date:

For your internship insurance to be made in time, you must apply “at least 10 days before the start of your internship”. The system does not accept applications made at 9 days remaining. If there are less than 10 days remaining before the start of your internship and you were somehow able to send your application for approval, this indicates you entered the dates incorrectly. For example, if you entered the date incorrectly and the year remains at 2060 (a common mistake made by those who enter in day-month-year) because you will be starting the internship in 2060 and naturally have more than 10 days remaining the system will have approved it. However, because you both did not follow the 10 day rule and entered in the incorrect date, your internship application will be deleted from the system by the department.

Note-Important: It is recommended that you do not submit your internship applications, if possible, exactly 10 days before your internship date and to not leave it until the last day. As a precaution, it would be safer for you to submit your applications through the system at least 12 days before your internship start date. When you submit your application 10 days before your internship starts, if your application, for whatever reason (entering the dates wrong, missing documents etc.) gets deleted and you have to submit your application again, there will be less than 10 days remaining and you might have to change your internship start date.

Mistake 8: Submitting the applications on national holidays, weekends or late hours and expecting a reply:

Since applications made on weekends, national holidays and late hours will not be checked during these times, it is recommended that you apply by taking into account these specified time periods. For example, you submitted your application on Saturday night (from that day on there are 10 days remaining until the start of your internship). However, you will be contacted on Monday at the earliest and if there is an error in your application, you will be asked to delete it from the system and upload it again, and you will not be able to apply less than 10 days before the start of your internship, so you will need to change your internship start date.

Mistake 9: Not following the application status through the system after applying for an internship:

You may not receive notifications in your e-mail for deleted applications in the system. For this reason, you are responsible for checking whether or not your internship application has been approved through the system.

Mistake 10: Trying to deliver all specified internship application documents by hand:

You must apply by uploading your internship application documents (Compulsory Internship Form) through the internship application system.

Mistake 11: Delivering internship reports before the end of the semester:

Internship reports must be submitted online through CATS on the dates announced by Res. Assist. Hülya Fidantek on the CATS Event and Announcement group.
